AZ-140 Exam Guide 2026: What Should You Actually Focus On?

AZ-140 looks narrow on paper. It is a certification about Azure Virtual Desktop, so it is easy to assume that preparation means learning host pools, session hosts, FSLogix, application groups, and a long list of configuration options.

The current exam is broader in practice.

You are expected to understand how networking, storage, identity, security, images, session hosts, user profiles, applications, monitoring, scaling, and recovery fit into one environment. Microsoft describes the target candidate as a server or desktop administrator with experience across Azure compute, networking, identity, storage, and resiliency. AZ-140 is not designed as a beginner’s introduction to Azure Virtual Desktop.

The useful focus is not covering every objective equally. It is building enough connected knowledge to reason through an AVD scenario when the requirements change.

That connection is also what makes the exam harder than a list of definitions suggests.

Start With Infrastructure Because It Carries the Most Weight

If I were starting AZ-140 preparation today, I would put most of my early attention on infrastructure.

Not because every infrastructure technology needs to be studied in depth, but because the decisions made here affect almost everything that follows.

A useful mental model is simple:

Network → compute → image → session → user environment

The pieces are related. A poorly understood network can become a connectivity problem. An unsuitable image strategy can create maintenance problems across session hosts. Storage decisions can affect profiles and the user experience.

That is more useful to understand than memorizing each feature separately.

Focus on How the Pieces Work Together

Azure networking should already be familiar to candidates with a solid Azure background. For AZ-140, the important step is applying that knowledge to AVD rather than starting from basic networking theory again.

The same applies to storage.

You should understand how storage choices affect user data, profiles, performance, and reliability. The current objectives include technologies such as Azure file shares and Azure NetApp Files, but the exam value is not in remembering a long list of storage products. It is in understanding why one approach fits a particular AVD requirement better than another.

The same principle applies to host pools, session hosts, and images.

A host pool provides the structure for delivering sessions. Session hosts provide the computing environment. Images provide the baseline used to create and maintain those hosts.

Once that relationship is clear, image management and automation become easier to place in context.

Identity, Security, and User Access Need One Framework

Identity and security account for 15–20% of the current exam, but their importance extends beyond that percentage.

These topics are easier to study when viewed as different layers of access control.

Identity determines who the user is and how authentication takes place. Azure RBAC governs administrative access to Azure resources. Conditional Access can add conditions to access decisions. Network and endpoint controls protect the environment around the session.

That framework is more useful than memorizing product names.

If you already work with Microsoft Entra ID or Azure security, you can spend less time relearning the fundamentals and more time understanding how those controls apply to AVD.

User Environments and Applications Are Where the Architecture Becomes Real

User environments and apps account for 20–25% of the exam.

This is where infrastructure decisions become visible to the person using the desktop.

A technically sound AVD environment still needs to deliver the right desktop, application, profile, and user experience. That makes this area easier to understand when it is connected back to the infrastructure rather than studied as a separate feature list.

FSLogix Is a Problem-Solving Topic

FSLogix is a good example.

The important point is not memorizing what Profile Containers, ODFC Containers, Cloud Cache, or application masking are called. It is understanding the problems they are intended to address.

Profile behavior depends on the relationship between the user, session host, and storage environment. Once that relationship makes sense, the individual FSLogix components become much easier to remember.

This is also why FSLogix should not be treated as an isolated exam topic.

Keep the User Experience in View

The same idea applies to applications, RemoteApp, desktop clients, redirection, printing, Microsoft 365 integration, and session behavior.

You do not need to memorize every feature as an independent item.

Focus on how the AVD environment delivers resources to the user and where a problem is likely to originate when that experience does not work as expected.

That shift in perspective is particularly useful for scenario-based questions.

Monitoring, Scaling, Backup, and Recovery Complete the Picture

Monitoring and maintenance represent 10–15% of the exam, making them the smallest domain by weighting.

They are still important because they describe what happens after the environment is deployed.

Monitoring gives administrators visibility into sessions, performance, capacity, and the health of the environment. Scaling addresses changing demand. Backup and disaster recovery deal with service continuity when something goes wrong.

These topics become much easier once the deployment architecture is understood.

You already know what is being monitored because you understand the environment being operated.

That is the main reason I would study this area after building a solid infrastructure foundation rather than treating it as another independent collection of Azure services.

What I Would Not Over-Study for AZ-140

Candidates can lose a lot of time treating every objective as an independent memorization target.

I would not.

Do not memorize every portal option without understanding the scenario behind it.

Do not learn FSLogix settings as isolated facts.

Do not study networking separately from AVD architecture.

Do not spend hours memorizing configuration values that you cannot connect to a real deployment problem.

And do not use practice questions as a replacement for hands-on work.

The exam weighting gives you a reasonable basis for prioritizing study time. Smaller domains still matter, but they do not need the same amount of preparation as the 40–45% infrastructure domain.

Hands-On Experience Changes the Way You Prepare

Microsoft’s current certification page describes AZ-140 as an intermediate specialty certification and expects candidates to have experience with Azure compute, networking, identity, storage, and resiliency. Microsoft also recommends training and hands-on experience and provides an official practice assessment and exam sandbox.

AVD has enough moving parts that reading about the architecture and actually working with it feel very different.

A small lab can make several concepts much easier to understand:

How a session host joins the environment, how a user receives an application, how image changes affect hosts, where profile data is stored, how scaling changes capacity, and what happens when a dependency becomes unavailable.

You do not need a massive lab environment. The important part is connecting a configuration decision with the behavior it produces.

That is a more useful measure of preparation.

When Practice Questions Become Useful

Practice questions are most useful when they expose something you do not understand.

Suppose you repeatedly miss questions involving FSLogix. Doing more questions on the same topic may not solve the problem. The missing knowledge may actually be related to profiles, storage, session hosts, or the purpose of a particular FSLogix component.

The same applies to networking and identity.

A useful practice loop is:

Question → mistake → diagnosis → study → retest.

Microsoft says its practice assessment is designed to show the style, wording, and difficulty of questions and help candidates identify areas where additional preparation is needed.

Use it to find gaps, not to memorize the assessment.

How to Tell Whether You Are Ready

A high practice score can be encouraging, but it should not be your only readiness test.

You should be able to explain an AVD environment without depending entirely on notes.

You should understand the relationship between the network design and user connectivity, the role of host pools and session hosts, the purpose of an image strategy, what FSLogix is solving, how identity and security choices affect access, how applications reach users, what needs monitoring, and what happens when part of the environment fails.

If you can explain those relationships comfortably, you are moving beyond memorization toward practical understanding.

That is where I would want to be before scheduling the exam.

Microsoft currently gives candidates 100 minutes to complete AZ-140. Efficiently recognizing the relevant architecture and eliminating unsuitable options therefore matters as well.

Final Judgment

The current AZ-140 exam does not justify dramatic claims about a completely redesigned 2026 certification. Microsoft’s study guide characterizes the July 20 update as involving minor changes in several areas, while the four major skill groups remain the same.

The preparation strategy is more important than the update headline.

Start with infrastructure because it carries the largest weight. Connect networking, storage, host pools, session hosts, and images instead of studying them as isolated topics. Build enough AVD hands-on experience to understand how those pieces behave. Then connect FSLogix, identity, applications, monitoring, and recovery to the same environment.

Practice questions should support that foundation by exposing gaps and testing application of knowledge.

If you can work through an unfamiliar AVD scenario and explain why one design fits better than another, your preparation is moving in the right direction.

If you still depend on isolated definitions to make most decisions, there is more work to do.
